My Games of 2020

I don't believe I did a list of my favourite games of 2019. It was on the to-do list but appears to have been left to the wayside. That was unfortunately due to a little bit of both personal and pure procrastination.

That said, it is now 2021, and I have that New Year Resolution gumption to do more writing this year. As for what I did enjoy in 2019? I'll give you a quick top 5.

Mindustry - A top down space themed crafting game with some Tower Defence elements
STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order - Star Wars game of the decade
Risk of Rain 2 - Risk of Rain goes 3D and is more electric than before.
Control - A Remedy game that may be a Alex Wake sequel in disguise.
Katana ZERO - A mind bending side scrolling hack-n-stash with added Neon

For the 2020 list, I will also give a Top 5 after the jump

Those that have played it have loved it and I'm no exception. Super Giant Games have always made something great and this is, at this time, their magnum opus. It is dripping with everything they have every put into their previous games with so much extra polish it deserve all the accolades it's received.

While using the existing mythos of the Greek pantheon is different to that of Baston, Tansistor and Pyre, their use of poetic licence is woven so well that you just want to end a run for more character development. In short, I would die for Dusa.

The gameplay is build on the now common Rogue-like/lite forumular. Start a run, get some power ups and clear rooms and get as far as you can, die and repet. As you progress more option will present and open up. The game also encourages you to befriend everyone for additional perks to your next outing.

This is a step up for how Story can be included into the Rogue-like game with a flair that may never be repeated.

Just throw some money at it if you haven't already

The first game is a classic in modern puzzle platforming. The sequel is a step in the same direction with the addition of a combat system that gives a lot more to do then the dodge, roll and bash movement of the first. I've yet to completely finish this one due to thumb fatigue but it is just as much of a classic as the last entry.

Moon Studios have created something that fills that hype I have for Hollow Knight 2.

Lightmatter is kind of like a fan love story to Valves Portal. A Story and Puzzel driven walking simulator in the best way ever. I found the ever escalating puzzle difficulty with the every present character of Virgil. He will berate you for your intrusion until the very end and set the tone of this game for the full play time but in the end you will show you know better.

BPM: Bullets Per Minute is so close to what some would consider an Asset Flip but the core game play machanic pushes it into the next level. Doing everything to a beat is just an extra challenge and often satisfaction to the gameplay. With a ripper soundtrack this is a awesome game to play when there is nothing else you want to do but blast some metal and be a Viking god.

Be the alien, eat the people, escape. A simple twist on the monster in the vent trope where you play the monster. The controls can feel a little punishing at times and you can feel a little lost in where to go next. I would still recommend it as an experience to not miss.
